About

Yachtclub Podersdorf is a sailing club (yacht club) providing sailing activities, regattas, training, and youth development.

Yachtclub Podersdorf was founded in 1962 by seven sailors from the Alten Donau. In 1965, the municipality of Podersdorf leased a club site.

In the 1970s, the club moved to a new site and opened, in 1979, a self-financed clubhouse including a harbour, sailors’ accommodations, and a canteen. The facility includes 7,245 m² of land and 5,000 m² of water, with space for around 120 cruisers and over 30 dinghies, as well as 34 cabins (Kabanen).

In the 1990s, the club established itself as an ocean-going yacht club and initiated the Blue Water Race. From the 2000s onward, it placed greater emphasis on youth work, which led to numerous national titles and international successes; in 2013, the YCP hosted an Austrian youth championship for the first time.

In 2008/09, and again after a fire in 2016, the clubhouse was renovated multiple times. At the end of 2017, an agreement was reached with the municipality to expand the club grounds by around 2,500 m².

In 2018, the YCP qualified for the Segelbundesliga for the first time. The early 2020s were shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing drought conditions on Lake Neusiedl. In 2024, the club celebrated significant sporting achievements, including an Olympic gold medal and world titles by its members.

Activities and training

Yachtclub Podersdorf organizes nautical training for members, from entry courses up to high-seas certificates. The program includes FB1 (A–Schein) covering fundamentals, maneuvers, safety, and knot knowledge.

FB2 (Coastal patent/ICC) includes navigation, weather, maritime law, passage planning, crew management, and practical trips.

FB3 (High-seas certificate) focuses on more demanding navigation, radar, weather analysis, and planning longer passages.

FB4 (Worldwide cruising range) covers long-range passage planning, advanced navigation, weather routing, emergency management, and the organization of ocean/high-seas trips.

The club also runs motorboat courses for lakes and rivers (including Donaupatent), covering maneuvering, docking/undocking, regulations, and practice-oriented instruction.

The club delivers theory and practice step-by-step, and runs courses regularly or irregularly depending on need. A–Schein courses take place in cooperation with the Segelgruppe Kalksburg, usually during the youth week. Training summary details the certificate stages.

For cruising, the club historically ran the Blue Water Race and organized chartered offshore sailing/longer cruises. Currently, it organizes Fahrtensegler training and practice cruises (e.g., FB2/Obere Adria trips and Fernfahrt events) and coastal/offshore practical training as part of higher-level courses. Cruising and club history provides further context.
