History

The club was founded in 1890 by William Thomas. The original clubhouse at 722 Sutter Street was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. The club purchased the 800 Powell Street site and opened the current Bliss & Faville-designed clubhouse in 1909. The library was established in 1917, and the club purchased the clubhouse in 1962.
