The University Club of Montreal is a private members’ club, founded in 1907 and now housed in the heritage Maison James-Reid-Wilson at 1201-A Sherbrooke Street West.

It provides an intimate clubhouse with dining and bar service, event spaces, curated art displays and member services, and runs a calendar of social, cultural and professional programming including speaker series, mentor dinners, roundtables, wine tastings and member meet-ups.

Membership is tiered (Regular, Emeritus, Young Professional, Non‑Resident, Associate and corporate options) with published dues and eligibility rules, and members may access reciprocity with over 100 clubs worldwide.

Events

The Club runs a full calendar of social, cultural and culinary events including speaker talks, themed dinners, wine-tastings, arts & culture outings and guided visits, roundtable discussions, member meet-ups, annual recognition dinners and Program Committee–organized events. Member Experience

Members receive access to an intimate clubhouse (Maison James-Reid-Wilson) with dining and bar facilities, curated cultural/art displays, a members-only web portal, programming (roundtables, mentor dinners, speaker series), assistance with event registration and reciprocal-club reservations, and preferential rates with hotel partners. Membership

UCM publishes membership categories and fees. As of February 1, 2026, Regular Member (university/college graduate) annual dues are CAD 1,800 with a first-year initiation fee of CAD 875. There are also Emeritus, Young Professional, Non-Resident and Associate categories with annual dues of CAD 900 and varying initiation fees. Eligibility

Eligibility varies by category. Regular membership requires graduation from an approved university/college. Emeritus membership is available to eligible members aged 65 or older; Young Professional to those 34 or younger; Non-Resident for those whose usual residence is outside Quebec; Associate membership for spouses or widows/widowers of members. Reciprocal Clubs

UCM maintains reciprocity with more than one hundred select clubs worldwide (North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania). Members may request a Letter of Introduction to visit reciprocal clubs. More details can be found on the global network page.

Facilities

The Club operates from the James-Reid-Wilson House (1201-A Sherbrooke Street West) and offers an intimate dining room (seating up to ~40 for dinner), a bar, a bistro area, a lounge with historical artifacts and curated art, and event spaces configurable for dinners and cocktail receptions (the Club cites capacity for up to about 60 for cocktails). Dining Options

The Club’s on-site restaurant offers daily lunch service and limited dinner service, à la carte and tasting menus, an extensive wine list and cocktail program, allergy accommodations on request, and private dining for members and their guests. Guest Information

Members may bring guests; dining and event attendance generally require reservations. The Club enforces an event/booking cancellation policy requiring members to cancel at least 48 hours in advance to avoid full charges. History

Founded in 1907 by McGill professors and other Montreal figures, the Club originally occupied a Percy Nobbs–designed clubhouse on Mansfield Street (completed 1913). The Club removed the degree requirement in 1973 and has evolved socially over the decades. In 2022, the Club relocated its operations to the heritage Maison James-Reid-Wilson on Sherbrooke Street, continuing its century-long cultural and social traditions.
