About

The North Wales Cruising Club was founded in 1928 and was established to bring together yachtsmen and motorboat owners cruising the waters around Anglesey, Conwy Bay and the Irish Sea.

Sailing Programme

An active on-the-water programme runs in spring, summer and autumn and includes club racing (with a self-adjusting handicap system), day sails, family barbecues, weekend trips to the Menai Strait and around Anglesey, week-long spring cruises and extended summer cruises. Past destinations have included the Isle of Man, Ireland and the west coast of Scotland. The club also runs named series/events and publishes a detailed events calendar and seasonal programme.

Final briefings are usually held in the clubhouse on the Friday before events. More details can be found in the sailing programme.

Training Opportunities

The club runs RYA-based training year-round, including online and shore-based classroom courses up to Yachtmaster Offshore level. Regular short courses include RYA VHF Short-range Radio, Radar, Diesel Engine and RYA First Aid and Day Skipper shore-based theory. Courses are run from the clubhouse, have limited class sizes, and are bookable through the club with a range of payment options.

For more information, visit the training opportunities page.

Club Events

A full social and events calendar combines on-water and shore-side activities, including racing series and cruises, Trafalgar Night, an Annual Dinner/awards evening, talks and presentations, barbecues, and fundraising events such as Bart’s Bash. The website events calendar lists club and third-party events.

Details can be found on the club events page.

Membership

Membership categories include Full (boat owners), Spouse/Partner, Crew (for people who crew for club members), Cadet, Overseas, and Non-Boating/Social. The club explicitly welcomes non-boat owners via a low-cost social membership and a Crew category. New applications are reviewed by the Committee prior to election.

For further details on membership, visit the membership information page.

Facilities

The clubhouse is located in Conwy near the Town Quay and provides bar/social space plus access to showers and washing facilities. The club owns and operates a launch that serves Conwy River swinging moorings, local pontoons, and Conwy and Deganwy marinas.

More information on facilities can be found here.

Dining Options

The club stages social events at various local venues, such as Conwy Golf Club and the Mulberry at Conwy Marina. The clubhouse is also used for talks and events, with light refreshments provided or available locally.

For more on dining options, visit the dining options page.

Social Activities

The club runs an active social programme that includes evening events, guest speaker talks, annual dinners and prizegivings, and BBQs. These activities are held both at the NWCC clubhouse and at nearby venues.

Details on social activities can be found on the social activities page.

Access Policy

Visitors by boat are welcome, and the launch will ferry visiting yachtsmen ashore if they take a mooring. The launch must be pre-booked, and members are given priority for its use. The club provides visitor access during bar opening hours and member access to facilities within stated clubhouse hours.

For more information, visit the access policy page.

Crew Matching Services

There is no formal advertised crew-matching service; however, crewing opportunities are supported by a Crew membership category and by member communications used to organize ad-hoc crewing and meet-ups.
