About

The New York Yacht Club is a private social and yacht club with headquarters at 37 West 44th Street in Manhattan and a waterfront sailing base at Harbour Court, Newport, RI. Its core activities include recreational and competitive sailing, yacht racing, and hosting regatta administration. The club was founded on July 30, 1844, by nine yachtsmen and has a long history of involvement in the America's Cup, holding the trophy until 1983. The Club purchased the Harbour Court estate in 1987 and commissioned it as its permanent Newport waterfront facility in 1988.

Clubhouse Features

The 44th Street clubhouse is a historic Beaux-Arts building that features a large Model Room, library, chart room, and formal event and dining rooms. Harbour Court is an eight-acre waterfront estate that includes the Main Mansion, Sailing Center, Station 10 (the original relocated clubhouse), Bolero Grill, formal dining rooms, Sailor’s Terrace, lower lawn, and pier areas, along with wireless service and waterfront launch and guest services.

Accommodation

Harbour Court provides a limited number of overnight rooms for regatta participants, with reservations managed through the Harbour Court front desk. Members and guests typically use local accommodations, and details regarding guest access and dining are available for event and regatta visitors.

Boatyard Facilities

The Club does not operate a boatyard or haul-out/shipyard services. Event participants are instructed to arrange charter, dockage, mooring, and service-yard needs privately or through local logistics providers, as the NYYC will not be involved in these arrangements.

Moorings and Anchorage

Harbour Court operates a launch within Brenton Cove and has limited moorings for members and participants. Some moorings are reserved for regatta support, and a designated anchorage area is accessible via the Club launch. Permission to anchor must be obtained from the Newport Harbormaster.

Training and Racing

The NYYC supports performance and development sailing through the Performance Sailing Fund, which provides grants for Olympic and Paralympic athletes, high-performance sailing, offshore sailing, and America’s Cup athletes. The Club operates organized team-racing programs and maintains fleets for team racing and training.

The racing program is longstanding and includes events such as the Annual Regatta, Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, and the biennial Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup, along with numerous class and world championships and offshore events.

Cruising

The NYYC runs cruising programs, including the historic New York Yacht Club Cruise, and stages coastal and offshore events. The Club has organized and supported offshore events, including Transatlantic races and summer cruise series.

Social Activities

The Club offers active social programming and member hospitality across both clubhouses, including formal dining and private events at the 44th Street clubhouse and Harbour Court. Casual dining is available at the Bolero Grill, and regatta hospitality is provided for visiting crews and guests, along with fundraising and social events tied to Club programs.

Dress Code

At Harbour Court, tasteful casual and sailing attire is permitted during the day. After 6:00 PM, collared shirts are required in the Bolero Grill and on the Sailor’s Terrace, while jackets are required for gentlemen in the Formal Dining Rooms. Denim and jeans are not permitted in formal areas.
